STRAINER RANGE

Hastelloy C276 Strainer — Corrosion-Resistant Alloy Construction

The Hastelloy C276 strainer is a corrosion-resistant pipeline filter with nickel-alloy wetted parts for 1/2" to 12" lines rated 150# to 600#, handling acids, chlorides and hypochlorite where 316L pits or stress-cracks. Chemical, pharmaceutical and offshore operators specify it for aggressive media and sour or seawater service.

APPLICATIONS

Where It Is Used

  • Chlorinated chemical service: Wet chlorine, hypochlorite and chloride-rich streams attack 316L by pitting; C276 stays passive in the same duty.
  • Pharmaceutical processing: Alloy wetted parts avoid iron and corrosion-product contamination of active-ingredient streams, with 3.1 certification and PMI records.
  • Offshore and seawater systems: Brine, seawater-lift and produced-water lines see chloride stress-corrosion cracking that austenitic stainless cannot survive.
  • Acid handling and storage: Sulphuric, hydrochloric and mixed-acid transfer lines use C276 where corrosion rates on 316L exceed 0.1 mm per year.
  • Flue gas desulphurisation: Limestone-gypsum slurry and wash water combine chlorides with low pH, the exact combination C276 was developed for.

HASTELLOY C276 STRAINER vs 316L stainless steel

Hastelloy C276 strainer compared with a 316L stainless steel strainer
 Hastelloy C276316L stainless steel
Chloride and pitting resistancePREN of roughly 65, so chlorides, hypochlorite and wet chlorine that pit 316L leave the alloy passive.PREN of roughly 25; pits and crevice-corrodes once chlorides and temperature rise.
Media compatibilitySulphuric, hydrochloric and mixed acids, seawater, brine, FGD slurry and sour service.Neutral and mildly corrosive media such as cooling water, clean steam and dilute caustic.
Stress-corrosion crackingMolybdenum and tungsten content resists chloride SCC in hot, wet service.Austenitic 316L is susceptible to chloride SCC above roughly 60 °C.
Relative material costThree to five times the wetted-material cost of 316L, driven by nickel and molybdenum content.Baseline cost; the default for clean water and non-aggressive chemicals.
Lead time6 to 10 weeks, because alloy mill stock is not held as shelf inventory.4 to 6 weeks from standard stock.
When to specifyWhen 316L shows pitting, SCC, or a measured corrosion rate above 0.1 mm per year.Whenever the service is proven benign — overspecifying alloy is pure cost with no benefit.
