SCREEN ELEMENTS

Wedge Wire Screen Element — Continuous-Slot Vee-Wire Cylinder

The wedge wire screen element is a continuous-slot Vee-wire cylinder, 25 mm to 600 mm outside diameter, with slot openings from 0.05 mm to 6 mm in SS316L or SS304. It delivers up to 60% open area and non-clogging flow for mining, water treatment and pulp mill streams carrying fibrous or high-solids load.

APPLICATIONS

Where It Is Used

  • Mining and minerals: Screens slurry, tailings and dewatering duty where the V-profile sheds coarse solids instead of blinding the way punched plate does.
  • Water treatment: Used as intake, backwash and media-retention screens that hold resin or sand while passing a high flow at low pressure drop.
  • Pulp and paper: Fibre recovery and white-water screening benefit from continuous slots that pass long fibres without wedging them into holes.
  • Chemical processing: Catalyst retention and resin-bed support screens rely on the ±0.05 mm slot tolerance to keep expensive media in place.
  • Food and beverage: Starch, sugar and CIP circuits use polished SS316L wedge wire because the smooth slot face is fully cleanable between batches.

SELECTION GUIDE

WEDGE WIRE SCREEN ELEMENT vs Perforated plate screen

Wedge wire screen compared with a perforated plate screen
 Wedge wire screenPerforated plate screen
Open areaUp to 60% open area on the same outside diameter, because the profile wires are narrow and evenly spaced.Typically 25% to 40% open area, limited by the minimum ligament between punched holes.
Clogging behaviourThe V-shaped slot widens behind the gap, so particles that enter pass through instead of wedging.Cylindrical holes trap elongated, fibrous and platy solids, and blinding builds from the hole wall inward.
Pressure dropLower clean pressure drop at an equal slot size, and the rise as it loads is slower.Higher clean pressure drop, rising quickly once a fraction of the holes blind over.
Slot toleranceContinuous slot held to ±0.05 mm along the full length, with no ligament variation.Hole size is fixed by punch tooling; accuracy depends on tool wear and plate thickness.
Cleaning and backwashBackflush releases solids cleanly off the smooth V profile with little mechanical work.Solids lodge in the straight hole wall and usually need brushing or high-pressure jetting.
Structural strengthProfile wire welded to support rods resists differential-pressure spikes without deformation.Thin plate can deform or tear at the perforation pattern when differential pressure spikes.
